Joyent Announces Partnership with Corel to Provide Bridge Between PC-based Productivity Tools and the Web

February 27, 2007 - Light, downloadable word processing and note taking tools integrate into award-winning on-line collaboration and backup suite.

SAN ANSELMO, CA (February 27, 2007): Joyent, the award-winning provider of on-demand applications, compute, storage, and services for small teams, announced its partnership with Corel to provide users of Corel WordPerfect® Lightning® access to Joyent’s collaboration suite (“Connector”). Corel WordPerfect Lightning officially launched worldwide today in beta.

Joyent’s Connector provides Corel WordPerfect Lightning users a suite of Web-based applications ideally suited for small teams – whether they are small businesses, teams within or across large organizations, or even families. Each team member has access to group email, calendar, address books, file storage, and bookmarks, all over the Web, and easily shared with other members of your team. Team members can also use IMAP clients to receive email, LDAP clients to access the address books, ICS clients to access calendars, and SFTP clients for access to files.

Each individual downloading Corel WordPerfect Lightning receives a Joyent Connector account with two users and 200MB of storage. Files, notes, and Web clippings associated with Corel WordPerfect Lightning will be automatically backed up to Joyent Connector, and available to view and share through Joyent Connector.

“Joyent made a big bet that collaboration on the network is going to be achieved through a hybrid approach,” said David Young, founder and CEO of Joyent. “We want to enable people to use the applications and services they enjoy on their PC today and inject that with the exciting possibilities of Web collaboration. When I saw Corel WordPerfect Lightning, I knew this was the perfect application on the PC to complement to our web software.”

“A hybrid approach to productivity resolves the shortcomings of Web-only software, providing all of the Web’s benefits without relying solely on an Internet connection,” said Richard Carriere, General Manager for Office Productivity at Corel. “Joyent clearly understands which tasks are best performed on the Web and which services offer today’s Web-centric PC users the most benefit. Their unique offering made them an obvious partner for WordPerfect Lightning and its hybrid approach.”

Joyent’s Connector will be delivered to Corel’s customers on Joyent’s pioneering Accelerator virtualization platform which will allow the partnership to serve millions of customers.
