Joyent Accelerators

Joyent’s Accelerator, the building block of our cloud, provides on-demand computing, storage, applications, and services to craft the exact solution you need for your application. Joyent Accelerator™ powered compute cloud provides a highly scalable on-demand infrastructure for running web sites, including rich web applications written in Ruby on Rails, PHP, Python and Java. Joyent’s cloud is open, scalable, and fast.

Accelerators provide the super friendly user-land directory structure and package management of Linux/NetBSD all built on top of a customized distribution of OpenSolaris. This means you get the power and stability of OpenSolaris, but with a familiar management system.

Accelerators are virtualized servers (8+ cores, 32+GB RAM) with vast amounts of NAS storage.  They are deployed within an ecosystem of the fastest networking and routing fabric available (Force 10), the best hardware load balancers (F5 Networks) or the best software load balancers (Zeus).  Apache, Nginx, MySQL, PHP, Ruby on Rails, and JAVA are pre-installed.

Joyent Accelerators come with full root access, giving you total control over setup and security configuration.Buy Now!

Joyent Accelerators Deliver Massive Scalability

Joyent’s compute cloud provides a highly scalable on-demand infrastructure for running web sites:

  • The largest Ruby on Rails site on Joyent does over 1.3 Billion page views per month.
  • The largest PHP site on Joyent supports over 2 Billion page views per month.

Scalability is achieved by combining multiple Accelerators into a complex cloud deployment that can expand or contract to meet the real world demands faced by your web application.  We help you scale in two ways:

Vertical Scale:

Accelerators come in sizes ranging from 1/4GB of Ram up to 32GB of RAM.

Horizontal Scale:

Add application-layer Accelerators and use hardware load balancing to support potentially hundreds of nodes.

Enterprise Class Security

Joyent is the only Cloud provider who delivers persistent, Enterprise Class Cloud computing infrastructure.

Root Access gives Control over Security Configuration:

Because Joyent Accelerators comes will full root access, clients can lock down the security configuration just as if they were in their own data center.

Solaris Security Features:

We use fundamentally the same highly secure Solaris kernel that banks, insurance companies, and health care providers have used and trusted for years. Joyent can provide enterprise clients with all the other security features of Solaris.

Private Cloud Solutions & PCI Compliance:

Joyent’s unique approach to virtualization enables us to partition your traffic, so that other clients cannot even see your systems. We can respond to your security concerns by locking down access to specific IP addresses.  We do this via a private cloud, that is defined and controlled in our Force 10 switches.

Lower Total Cost of Ownership

On Joyent, you do not have to build new tools just to manage your application in the cloud.

CIOs are concerned about operational management overhead. Yet whole companies, such as RightScale, have sprung up to try and help users deal with the complexity of running ethereal virtualized servers on Amazon’s EC2.  For example, Amazon’s XEN-based ‘hypervisor’ technology forces you through a range of complex steps when an instance needs to be rebooted. These steps include remapping IP addresses and drives back to failed AMIs, porting data back from S3.

These ‘extra’ operational hurdles simply do not exist at Joyent. Our approach to virtualization requires much lower administrative overhead.  Cloud computing promises flexibility, but it shouldn’t force enterprise users into an expensive tradeoff where they have to deal with additional operational costs simply to gain that flexibility.

pkgsrc package management makes adding and managing Opensource software easy

Joyent Accelerators come with Apache, Nginx, MySQL, PHP, Ruby on Rails, and JAVA pre-installed.

Installing additional software is easy using the pkgsrc (package source) package management system for Unix-like operating systems. pkgsrc was made popular by NetBSD, OS X-compatible DarwinPorts and several GNU/Linux distributions.

Joyent maintains a repository of over 600 packages that have been specifically compiled and certified on Joyent Accelerators.
